Ongoing Costs & Waste

Keeping toys and shared items clean shouldn't require endless supplies, constant restocking, additional costs, and unnecessary waste.

Key Challenges

  • Recurring spend on wipes, sprays, and cleaning chemicals

  • Constant restocking and supply management

  • High volumes of disposable waste from single-use products

  • Storage & disposal of chemicals

Why It Matters

Traditional sanitization methods often rely on products that must be continually purchased, replaced, stored, and disposed of.  Over time, these recurring costs and consumables can add up—both financially and operationally—while also increasing environmental waste.

In busy environments, staff already balancing multiple responsibilities may also spend significant time managing cleaning supplies, restocking products, and carrying out repetitive manual cleaning tasks throughout the day.

How ToySafe Helps

  • Reduces reliance on disposable wipes and chemical-based cleaning products

  • Minimizes ongoing consumable costs and restocking requirements

  • Supports a more streamlined, lower-waste sanitization process

  • Delivers a fast, enclosed 5-minute sanitization cycle with minimal manual effort

The ToyVault’s cold plasma supports reduction of contaminants on shared items and removes odours in a complete 5-minute cycle, without the need for continual chemical use, rinsing, or disposable wipes.

No complicated setup, no consumable-heavy process, and no harmful chemical residues left behind.

The Result

A more efficient and sustainable approach to sanitization with fewer consumables, less waste, and reduced operational strain.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Alpesh manages a busy children’s area within a public library, where toys, activity stations, sensory items, and shared learning tools are used by dozens of children and families throughout the day.

Keeping those items sanitized is important—but maintaining supplies of wipes, sprays, gloves, and paper products becomes a constant operational task.

Staff regularly balance programming, customer support, shelving, and cleaning responsibilities, while shared items move continuously between children. During busy periods, consumables run low quickly, waste accumulates throughout the day, and the ongoing cost of disposable cleaning products continues to grow.

The Shift

With ToySafe, Alpesh reduces reliance on constant manual wiping and chemical-based cleaning products. Shared items can be sanitized quickly in a simple 5-minute cycle—without adding to the library’s ongoing consumable use or daily waste output.

The Results

  • Reduced reliance on wipes, sprays, and disposable products

  • Less time spent managing cleaning supplies and manual sanitization

  • Lower operational waste from day-to-day cleaning processes

  • Greater confidence in a more sustainable, streamlined hygiene approach

Industry Validation

Childcare operational planning resources in BC identify janitorial supplies and cleaning labour as recurring operational expenses that must be budgeted for annually, suggesting the annual cost could be as much as 14.5% of overall facility and maintenance costs.

A peer-reviewed review article published in BioResources reported that global consumption of disinfecting wipes increased substantially during the pandemic and continues to remain elevated due to heightened hygiene expectations. The paper notes that most wipes contain synthetic plastic fibres and “may take up to 100 years to degrade” while noting the growing waste-management burden associated with single-use wipes.

Of the almost five million tonnes of plastic waste that was thrown away in Canada in 2021, only 7% was recycled. The rest ends up in landfills and the environment, littering parks, beaches, streets, and other places we value.
